PSHE Intent and Implementation
At Raleigh and Admirals we use ‘Jigsaw, the Mindful Approach to PSHE’ as our scheme of work to teach PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) and RHSE (Relationships, Health and Sex Education).
Intent
We value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.
We include the statutory Relationships, Health and Sex Education within our PSHE lessons. We define Sex Education as understanding human reproduction and we teach this in the Changing Me unit. We inform parents of their right to request their child be withdrawn from the PSHE lessons that explicitly teach this.
Implementation
We teach PSHE through a whole-school approach. It promotes the spiritual, moral, social, cultural and mental development of pupils at school, it prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life, as well as promoting British Values. Lessons also encompass our school values; Aspiration, Respect and Kindness.
The Jigsaw programme is a comprehensive, carefully thought-through scheme of work which brings consistency and progression to our children’s learning. Jigsaw covers all areas of PSHE through six puzzle pieces (units); Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. These are taught across the school, building on children’s learning every year.
There are many additional aspects of the Jigsaw programme to enhance the learning experience, including Jigsaw Friends (soft toys used as teaching aids) and Jigsaw Chimes, which are used to help encourage calming and mindfulness practice.
Class teachers deliver the lessons each week in order to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way. These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways throughout the school; assemblies, class dojos, Learning Charter, relationships between children and adults and displays.
Impact
Through our approach to teaching PSHE, we hope the children will acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives. The lessons help to develop the qualities and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
